The Creative Future Award

The Creative Future award is a creation by Kate Jones of the acclaimed Gillies Jones Glass and up and coming Delhi-based textile designer Jigisha Patel. Kate and Jigisha spent some time together in Rajasthan, researching patterns and exploring colours they felt appropriate for this commission by the British Council.

Jigisha then travelled to North Yorkshire, to work with Kate drawing and distilling the images they had collected, and then directly working the ideas onto the glass at the Gillies Jones studio. It was an interactive process - Kate learning from Jigisha about the rhytms, form and meanings of Indian textile patterns, and Jigisha learning from Kate about applying these patterns onto a 3D form and the consideration of the transparency and qualities of the glass.

Kate tells Creativeconomy.org.uk she had chosen a bowl design because it is ubiquitous, and crosses all barriers visually. "It has been a form we have used in our work for a number of years", she says. The pattern itself is a very traditional Indian motif, a cypress leaf taken from a skirt. Jigisha changed the form subtly but always with a clear cultural reference.

The process was an amazing experience , as Kate tells us, "It is hard to describe without sounding cliched. Meeting Jigisha, enjoying the warm hospitality of Faith Singh and her family at Anokhi, and the incredible opportunities Faith created for us in Rajasthan in researching textile patterns and the exploring the rich history and creativity at Anokhi itself were an amazing experience". Anokhi is a dynamic creative partnership in Jaipur that has a unique way of working with local artisans, and had supported Kate and Jigisha on their artistic quest.

Kate was also a part of the Creative Future school faculty, so we asked her what her experience in Bangalore was like. "Exceptional! The speakers I heard were inspiring, and I have never been so impressed with the depth of business advice offered to the shortlisted candidates and pleased to hear business practices put into a much larger cultural, economic , social and indeed spiritual context." Kate was also impressed by the creative talent of the participants, adding "I really look forward to seeing the development of these people and the growth of their diverse work".

The award is now in Mumbai and will be presented to the winner of the Creative Future programme this coming February.
