A creative planet

One of the most dynamic and exciting discoveries to affect the economy in recent years is the realisation that knowledge, in the sense of intellectual property, contributes to the economic and social growth of any nation. If properly nurtured by an appropriate infrastructure, it can be a mighty and far reaching economic asset, bringing substantial tangible and intangible benefits.

Because creativity is at the root of intellectual property, and industry, or productivity, at the root of economic growth, the creative industries – a notion still provoking much debate around the world – are one of the key components to sustainable economic development, successful economic transition and broad economic and social regeneration, everywhere. The discussion on how this notion interacts with culture, globalisation, intellectual property rights and entrepreneurship promises to be a lively one. And we wish to contribute to it through this website, sharing and inviting you to share ideas and experiences on the road towards a creative – economic – future.

Boundaries and impact

There is an ongoing and lively discussion as to what the ideas of creative industries, cultural economy, creative economy and knowledge economy may include, and where these concepts cross into arts and the entertainment industry. The definition we have adopted was created by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, DCMS. The creative industries, are "those industries that have their origin in individual creativity, skill and talent and which have a potential for wealth and job creation through the generation and exploitation of intellectual property".

Still, it remains an important point of discussion what exactly individual talent, wealth creation potential and intellectual property rights include and how they relate both to each other, and to the overall concept.

The impact of the creative industries is quite clear: in the UK, they are the fastest growing sector of the economy; in Colombia and India, they are making a tangible and growing contribution to the economy of those countries; in post-war Bosnia, they are helping put the country back onto the map of normality. The creative industries are a growing global phenomenon - with a very promising outlook.
