Fastest growing sector of economyIn the United Kingdom, the creative industries already outperform traditional sectors of the economy, such as agriculture and car manufacturing. The 2001 DCMS Mapping Document, which covered all of the UK, showed that the sector was worth about 8% o the UK’s GDP in 2000 and that, between 1997 and 2000, the sector had achieved average annual growth of 9.0% - three times more than the overall economy. Many parts of the UK, such as Yorkshire, Cornwall or the North West of England, have gone on to analyse their own creative industries. These mapping exercises have helped these regions identify their particular strenghts in the creative industries, but also to create support measures aimed at increasing both their economic impact, as well as general awareness for the creative industries.A joint effortThe creative industries have become an important point on various agendas and are included in policies at different levels. The Department of Culture, Media and Sport, DCMS coordinate national policy; various Arts Councils and Regional Development Agencies also work with the creative industries, as do various councils and local authorities.Given the significance of the sector in the UK economy, the British Council has set onto a two-way trip of carrying the experience internationally, benefitting and making a difference to economies overseas and in the UK. Furthermore, the mapping exercises throughout the UK have all shown that creative businesses tend to cluster around centres of academic creative excellence. The UK has colleges and universities with excellent international reputations for the quality of their research and teaching programmes, as well as for employment opportunities of their graduates. In fact, the UK’s education system offers pupils at all levels opportunities to develop their creative skills and a small number of schools, at secondary level, have been given special status because of their commitment to develop the creative skills of their students.
